I think we really hit the whammy on weather this week. It was cold!!! (okay, be California standards) We were lucky the weather was nice on our drive up I-5 with a stop at Harris Ranch for a steak and salad lunch. We pulled into Napa in the late afternoon and decided to walk to the grocery store. brrrrr!!! Too cold to be out walking.
It rained all of Sunday so we decided to hit downtown Sonoma and a couple of nearby wineries. We had fun just doing 2 to 3 tastings per day enjoying each winery's ambiance and chatter. Plus the weather afforded small crowds or even some where we were the only people there. I think that's a happy medium without being rushed or losing any of the flavors on our palate.
Wineries we visited were Gundlach-Bundschu, Buena Vista (fun, friendly, and great wines), Trefethen, V. Sattui, Cakebread (need appointment), Mondavi (just walked around), Alpha Omega (new winery), Mumms (looked around), and others we wanted to visit but the cold weather kept us in places longer. Also we really enjoyed The Girl and the Fig in Sonoma; lunch was a bit pricey but the food was excellent. As always we had a picnic lunch at V. Sattui. This was the first time we actually did a tasting at Sattui and the result is to skip the tasting and just enjoy the picnic food. We decided in the future to stay either in Carneros or Yountville to give it a try.
Anyone care to join us in the future? It really is a learning experience each time!
